چکیده

Acute intoxication with many of the antiepileptic drugs may present with mental symptoms (encephalopathy, confusion, psychosis), sometimes in the absence of other clinical signs such as nystagmus, dysarthria or ataxia etc. (Logan and Freeman 1969 ; McDonal and Bolman 1975 ; Ahmad et al. 1975 ; Reynolds 1982). Atypical anticonvulsant toxicity in mentally retarded children have been reported but not in a specific association with mental retardation (Logan and Freeman 1969 ; Dahl 1967 ; Hoaken et al. 1963 ; Prensky et al. 1971). In this paper, we present two patients with chronic organic brain syndrome or borderline mental retardation who developed a functional psychosis associated with anticonvulsant toxcity.

Epileptic psychoses and anticonvulsant drug treatment.

Forty four consecutive patients with epilepsy and psychoses were studied retrospectively for psychotic episodes associated with changes in antiepileptic drug therapy. Twenty seven patients (61%) developed their first episode of psychosis unrelated to changes in their antiepileptic drug regimen. Twenty three of these patients developed psychoses with temporally unrelated changes in seizure frequ...

Interictal acute psychoses in temporal lobe epilepsy during withdrawal of anticonvulsant therapy.

Acute interictal psychotic attacks during withdrawal of medication are described in two patients with temporal lobe epilepsy submitted to depth EEG study with a view to surgical treatment. The patients were on chronic treatment with clonazepam associated in one with phenobarbitone and in the other with phenobarbitone plus carbamazepine. Our observations suggest that the acute withdrawal of clon...

Slow saccades and hypometria in anticonvulsant toxicity.

We report a patient with abnormal saccades in association with anticonvulsant toxicity (phenytoin 27.5 micrograms/ml, phenobarbital 18.8 micrograms/ml). The patient looked toward visual targets either with multiple, small, hypometric saccades or with single slow saccades. These abnormalities resolved when anticonvulsant levels returned to therapeutic range. Thus, slow saccades may be clinical e...

Infection-associated clozapine toxicity.

Three case vignettes are presented documenting the rise in serum clozapine that occurred at a time of acute infection in these patients. The literature on this phenomenon is scant. The physiological processes that occur in the acute phase of the inflammatory response are summarized and provide an explanation of how clozapine levels may rise in response to infection. The risk of clozapine toxici...

Synthesis and Anticonvulsant Activity Evaluation of 3-alkoxy-4-(4- (hexyloxy/heptyloxy)phenyl)-4H-1,2,4 -triazole

A series of 3-alkoxy-4-(4-(hexyloxy/heptyloxy) phenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole was synthesized. The anticonvulsant effect and neurotoxicity of the compounds were calculated with maximal electroshock (MES) test and rotarod tests with intraperitoneally injected mice. Among the synthesized compounds, compound 3-heptyloxy-4-(4-(hexyloxy) phenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole (5f) was the most active one and also had...
